A 2025 review in Nutrients synthesized more than 100 large-scale epidemiological studies and meta-analyses and found the association held across populations and across both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee — pointing to coffee’s non-caffeine compounds, particularly chlorogenic acids and antioxidants, as major contributors.1 A 2024 cardiometabolic review in GeroScience reached a compatible conclusion and described the mechanisms behind it: antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, lipid-modulating, and insulin-sensitizing effects.2
The regulatory picture has moved in step with the science. In 2025 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration finalized an updated definition of the “healthy” nutrient-content claim; plain black coffee, at fewer than five calories per serving, qualifies under the new criteria.3 (To be precise: the rule sets standards a food can meet, and coffee meets them — it is not the FDA singling coffee out by name.)
The same research that establishes coffee’s benefits has, with increasing precision, identified when those benefits are lost. A 2025 study in the European Heart Journal followed 40,725 U.S. adults for nearly a decade and found that people who drank coffee mainly in the morning had a 31% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease — and a 16% lower risk of dying from any cause — than non-coffee-drinkers.
